The largest investment project in the history of “Henri Coandă” Airport Modernization of Runway No. 1 (takeoff/landing runway)

CNAB has launched the public tender for the modernization of Runway No. 1 (takeoff/landing) at “Henri Coandă” Airport.

This major large-scale project marks a decisive step in modernizing Romania’s aviation infrastructure, being the most important investment project in the history of the airport.

Through this project, the Bucharest Airports National Company continues the modernization and expansion of the operational capacity of “Henri Coandă” Airport, aligning the airport infrastructure with the strictest international aviation standards.

The project includes: the complete reconstruction and modernization of Runway 08R-26L at Bucharest “Henri Coandă” International Airport; construction of 5 new aircraft taxiways; modernization of 2 existing taxiways; full replacement of the runway and taxiway lighting systems; modernization of the underground cable networks powering the lighting system; reconfiguration of the runway safety area; relocation of the perimeter road; and construction of jet-blast protection pads at the runway ends to protect embankments from engine blast during takeoff.

For operational and technical reasons, the works will be carried out in phases, both to ensure continuity of airport operations and to maintain access for military aircraft to the runway from the 90th Airlift Base.

The contract has an estimated value of approximately 106 million euros. The maximum execution period for the works is 16 months, the design phase is 9 months, and the minimum warranty period is 5 years from the date of project acceptance. The deadline for submitting bids is December 18, 2025.

The last major modernization of Runway No. 1 took place 31 years ago, in 1994. Since then, to ensure the safe conduct of air traffic at “Henri Coandă” Airport, the runway was repaired in 2017, during the previous mandate of the current CNAB Director General, Bogdan Mîndrescu.
