The first stage (2023–2025) of airport infrastructure modernization at Otopeni Airport has been COMPLETED.

The Bucharest Airports National Company announces that the modernization works covering a total area of 500,000 sqm, planned as part of the 2023–2025 stage of the project to increase the operational capacity of Henri Coandă Airport and to optimize aircraft operating conditions, have been officially received.

The investment included several major objectives for the modernization of Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport. Thus, the passenger boarding–disembarking Apron No. 2 was expanded. Upon completion of these works, the total surface reached 190,000 sqm, increasing the aircraft parking capacity with 28 additional positions for Code C aircraft (e.g., Airbus A320, Boeing B737). Some of these positions will also be used for parking 3 Code E aircraft (e.g., Boeing B777, Airbus A330).

A new taxiway was built, modernization works were carried out over an area of 310,000 sqm on the five taxiways connected to Runway 08L–26R, and two rapid-access service roads were completed to ensure handling equipment can reach aircraft parked on the airport aprons efficiently.

This stage also included works on the airport road structures, the rainwater drainage systems serving the movement areas, as well as on the runway lighting and LED illumination systems.

The project is aligned with the strategy to comply with the specifications of European Union Regulation no. 139/2014 of the European Commission on establishing technical requirements and administrative procedures for aerodromes.

The contract was awarded in December 2022 to PORR CONSTRUCT, with a total value of approximately 75 million euros for design and execution.

The Bucharest Airports National Company has already initiated the necessary steps for Stage II of the modernization and operational capacity increase of the infrastructure at Henri Coandă Airport, launching the public tender for the modernization of Runway No. 1—the most important investment project in the history of Henri Coandă Airport.
